Lucienne Browne will be performing BOXES as part of Nottingham Playhouse Pride in July.
Toni and TJ are brother and sister. They have seen a lot. At first glance they fit nicely into stereotypical boxes. But who are they really?
After their father dies, they find themselves in a room together. Suddenly their close proximity causes them to reveal ground shaking facts about themselves and their family. A unique story for the British stage, issues of mixed race identity, gender fluidity and pansexual personalities in the black community come to the fore. Thrown into the mix, a War Veteran father from America trying to fit into the British way of life and a white English mother unable to face the real horrors of racial identity for her two children in time when little tolerance present in society.
The boxes Toni and TJ thought they fit into are suddenly blown apart. BOXES explores seldom heard voices from an urban, post modern Britain.
Based on a true story.
